FAQ |
Functional Medicine

1 / What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered approach to healthcare that focuses on uncovering the root causes of illness and addressing them through personalized treatment plans. It takes into account the interconnectedness of the body's systems and aims to restore balance and promote overall wellness.

2 / How does functional medicine differ from conventional medicine?

Conventional medicine often focuses on treating symptoms without addressing the underlying root causes of illness. In contrast, functional medicine seeks to identify and address the root causes of health issues, taking into account factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental influences.

3 / What conditions can functional medicine help with?

Functional medicine can help with a wide range of conditions, including chronic diseases, autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, metabolic disorders, and more. By addressing the underlying root causes of illness, functional medicine aims to alleviate symptoms and promote long-term healing.

4 / What can I expect during a functional medicine consultation?

During a functional medicine consultation, your practitioner will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your health history, symptoms, lifestyle factors, and genetic predispositions. They may order specialized tests such as blood tests to assess your biochemical makeup and identify underlying imbalances. Based on this information, they will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

5 / What if I was told my labs are normal?

This is something I hear quite often, if you’re dealing with sickness, illness or just generally feeling unwell, then there must be something that isn’t functioning at its most optimal. Did you know lab results have a wide range that is used as more of a predictor for red flags or medications that they can prescribe but its not derived for overall wellness? For example let's say a lab is between 10-20 units, but with your age, height, ethnicity, weight, etc., we know that you would feel and function best at 15 units, and you’re at 18 units, why would we not work on doing the things we can control to bring that closer to your optimal level? I would not want to wait till it's 19, 20, now 21 units and red flagged before we start doing some treatment.

6 / How long does it take to see results with functional medicine?

The timeline for seeing results with functional medicine varies depending on factors such as the complexity of your condition, your overall health, and your adherence to the treatment plan. Some patients may experience improvements within weeks or months, while others may require longer-term care to achieve optimal results. Your practitioner will work closely with you to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
